How can a thyroid blood test help you?

This test checks your thyroid function and helps you understand if your symptoms might be due to a thyroid disorder, like an overactive or underactive thyroid. It also checks to see if you’re getting enough of the nutrients needed for a healthy thyroid or whether your symptoms may be due to key vitamins and minerals deficiencies.

An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) and overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) could explain :

  • weight loss or weight gain
  • shaking and tremors
  • increased irritability, anxiety, or depression
  • fatigue and lack of energy
  • muscle aches, cramps, or weakness
  • low sex drive (libido)
  • irregular or heavy periods

Once diagnosed, your thyroid function needs to be monitored to ensure your thyroid hormone levels are optimal. With a GP report and advice on how to maintain or improve your results, we help you understand how to support your thyroid function.

We recommend doing a thyroid blood test every 3 months if you have an underactive or overactive thyroid.

What's covered in this blood test?

Advanced thyroid profile

Learn more

Your thyroid gland produces hormones that help control your metabolism. If it isn't working properly it can cause mood problems and weight gain or loss. A blood test can check for thyroid disorders.

Vitamin D

Learn more

Vitamin D plays a key role in your long-term health, particularly your bone health. It's also important for a strong immune system and is linked to your sleep, energy levels, and mood.

Ferritin

Learn more

Ferritin can help you understand more about your iron levels — a nutrient that helps transport oxygen around your body. If your levels are low, it can affect your energy, sleep, and fitness.

Active vitamin B12

Learn more

Active vitamin B12 is the amount of vitamin B12 your body can actually use. Low vitamin B12 levels can make you feel depressed and might affect your sleep and fitness.

Things to note before collecting your sample

A biotin supplement can lead to falsely high T3 and T4 results, as well as low TSH levels. If you're taking biotin, avoid taking it for at least 2 days before collecting your blood sample — to reduce the risk of it affecting your results.

You can also add that you're taking biotin to your health profile — so our GPs are aware when reviewing your results.
