What can a liver blood test tell you?

Your liver is one of your body’s most essential organs. It helps eliminate waste, regulates your hormones, and converts food into energy.

A liver blood test (formerly known as a liver function blood test) helps you learn how your diet and lifestyle affect your liver health. Plus, find out how to support your liver with personalised advice recommended by our GPs in a detailed report.

An abnormal result isn’t always a problem — many things can cause this. But sometimes, it can suggest liver disease. If you have any liver disease symptoms, your results might need further investigation. The bottom line is to remember that a normal result doesn't always rule out liver disease.

What's covered in this blood test?

A liver blood test (formerly known as liver function test) measures your bilirubin, alkaline phosphate, Gamma-GT, total protein, albumin, globulin, and alanine transferase (ALT). Measuring these things can help check your liver health and also check for signs of inflammation or damage.

How to prepare for your test

Avoid heavy exercise 48 hours before doing your liver blood test. This includes anything that might make your muscles sore. We recommend this to avoid affecting your test results.

Why has the name of this blood test changed?

A liver blood test was formerly known as a liver function test or LFT. The name has changed to reflect new guidance from the British Liver Trust, reporting that a liver blood test can’t diagnose or rule out liver disease when analysed on its own.

When doing this blood test, one of our reporting GPs will review your:

• previous liver blood test results (if you have any)

• health profile

• body mass index (BMI)

• alcohol consumption

• diet

Your data is in safe hands, we use the latest encryption technologies and continually assess our GDPR compliance.
