Did you know?

The first ever oral contraceptive was developed at the University of Manchester in 1961.

What is albumin?

Albumin is a protein made by your liver. It's found almost everywhere in your body.

Measuring your albumin levels can help check your liver and kidney function.

What is its function?

Albumin helps transport nutrients and hormones. It also helps grow and repair tissues in your body.

What can cause it to change?

Low albumin levels If your liver or kidneys aren’t working properly, it can cause your albumin levels to drop. This might be caused by a poor diet, an infection, Crohn's disease, coeliac disease, kidney disease, or inflammation.

High albumin levels Dehydration, an immune disease, or a diet very high in protein can cause your albumin levels to increase. Mildly raised albumin levels are fairly common — especially in younger people.

What are the most common symptoms?

If your albumin levels are low as a result of liver damage, common symptoms include:

  • jaundice — yellow skin and eyes
  • itching
  • nausea and vomiting
  • tiredness
  • unexplained weight loss
  • swelling around your eyes, stomach, or legs

What factors within my control could influence it?

Low albumin levels To prevent low albumin caused by liver damage, avoid too much:

  • saturated and trans fats — like fried foods, red meat, cakes, pastries, and cream
  • refined carbohydrates — like white bread and white pasta
  • added sugars — like fruit juices, fizzy drinks, and sweets
  • salt — like frozen foods, salted nuts, and smoked or cured meats
  • alcohol — limit to 14 units a week (equivalent to about 6 pints or 7 medium-sized glasses of wine)

High albumin levels To lower your albumin levels, make sure you're drinking enough water and your diet isn't too high in protein.
