What is your metabolism?

Your metabolism refers to the chemical processes that occur in your body that keep you alive — like breathing and breaking down food into energy. For these processes to happen, energy is required. Your body size, age, gender, and genes affect your metabolism.

If your energy requirements are low, your metabolism might be referred to as “slow”. For some people, a “slower” metabolism might happen if your muscle mass is low — because your muscle cells require more energy than fat cells. Or sometimes it might be due to a hormonal issue.

What can this test tell you?

If you’re finding it hard to lose weight or putting on weight for no particular reason, this test might help you understand why. If you're carrying some excess weight, it’s also worth checking your liver function and diabetes risk.

What's included in this test?

If you carry excess weight, it’s linked to increased inflammation in your body — a risk factor for heart disease. A high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) test can measure this inflammation.

Omega-3 and omega-6

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are types of fat that you can only get from your diet. A diet high in omega-3 fats is linked to an increased metabolism and can help aid weight loss.

It is important to get the balance between the two right — that's why we measure your omega-6:omega-3 (AA:EPA) ratio. Ideally, this ratio should be 2:1, but most Western diets lead to ratios around 10:1.

Liver function

Your weight and liver health are tightly linked. If you're carrying excess weight, it can affect your liver function and over time it can increase your risk heart disease and diabetes.

A liver function test measures the following markers: alanine transferase (ALT), albumin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bilirubin, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) and globulin.

Cholesterol profile

A lipid profile measures your total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. This can give you insights into your risk of heart disease.

If you carry excess weight, it's linked to raised blood sugar levels and can increase your risk of prediabetes. When the glucose (sugar) in your blood rises, it binds to the haemoglobin in your red blood cells — glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c). And because red blood cells live for about 3 months, a HbA1c test measures your average blood glucose levels over the last few months.

Basic thyroid profile

The thyroid is a gland in your neck that produces hormones that help control your metabolism — processes like breaking down food into energy. If your thyroid gland is underactive, it can mean you’re not producing enough of these hormones, causing low energy levels. It can also make it harder for you to lose weight.

A basic thyroid profile measures:

- thyroxine (T4) — the main hormone produced by your thyroid
- thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) — a hormone that regulates your thyroid
